TRE KRONOR AF STOCKHOLM

Post by shipstamps » Fri Sep 12, 2008 5:08 pm

The death knell for sailing ships was sounded with the dawn of the steam engine. As the merchant trade demanded faster and more reliable means of transportation, wind-driven cargo ships started their long slide into obscurity. Today, just a tiny fraction of the ships that ply the seas are wind-driven, and almost all of those are used for recreation or historical purposes.

In July 2008 Sweden issued a nice set sailing vessels, and one of this is the newly built TRE KRONOR AF STOCKHOLM, (Three Crowns of Stockholm.)

She is built after the plans of the GLADAN a Swedish brig built in 1857 and used by the Swedish Navy as transport and later as navy brig for training of cabin crews.

The plans to build the brig were made by four Swedish gentlemen in 1993. The first drawings were presented in 1994. Owned by Tre Kronor AB 2900, Stockholm, and they will manage the ship. The society has about 4000 members
1997 The keel was laid down at Skeppsholmen, Stockholm.
27 August 2005 she was launched under the name TRE KRONAR AF STOCKHOLM, she was christened by Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.

Her hull is made of 544 m³ oak wood; about 1.000 oak trees were needed. Also her frame was made of 6 inch full grown oak.

When the Tall Ships Race of 2008 come to Stockholm in July 2007, the TRE KRONOR AF STOCKHOLM will be used as staff-vessel, and during the start on 31 July 2008.
