The 1.50 dr. stamp depicts another contemporary vessel, the Terpsichore, from Tombaziz, Hydra Island, from a painting by the French shipbuilder and painter, Antoine Roux, in the National Historical Museum in Athens. Towards the end of the war, the frigate Hellas and the steamship Karteria were added to the fleet. The latter, featured on the 2.50 dr. stamp, was the first steamship to see action in a naval engagement. She was under the command of an English naval officer, Frank Hastings. The stamp is from a painting by Hastings in the National Historical Museum, Athens. SG1170

The TERPSICHORE was built in 1818 at Hydra for the brothers Tombazi as a topsail rigged wooden schooner.
Launched under the name TERPSICHORE.
Length 27.45m.
She was built as a merchant ship but refitted in a warship during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1828)
Armed with 6 – 12pdr guns and 1 – 48pdr on the forecastle.
She was a fast sailing ship, and called by the Turkish “devil ship”.
Can’t find anything on her career during the War of Independence, and her fate after the war.
During the Greek war of Independence the TERPSICHORE carried the Hydra Island flag.
