FUBBS yacht
The yacht on this stamp is identified as FUBBS and the ISABELLA is not depicted as given on the stamp.
Built by Phineas Pett at Greenwich in 1682 as a Royal Yacht for King Charles II.
Launched as the FUBBS, named after the pet name of the Duchess of Portsmouth one of the mistresses of the king.
Tonnage 148 ton, dim. 80 x 21ft.
Two masted, she carried a large sail area which did her give exceptional speed.
After King Charles II’s dead, was she used by King James II also as yacht.
1701 Rebuilt at Woolwich Drydock for the Royal Navy, not renamed.
Dim. then given as 73.6 x 21.1 x 9.1ft, length of keel 63ft.
Armament 12 guns.
Crew 40.
May 1701 commissioned, under command of Richard Biron as a bomb-ketch rigged warship for Rooke’s fleet in the Mediterranean.
1706 -1707 Was a unit in the fleet of Admiral George Byng.
1708 Under command of Charles Desborough.
1714 Stationed in the Mediterranean.
1716 Under command of Capt. William Collier.
1724 Rebuilt, not renamed.
July 1781 broken up.
