She was built in 1819 as the JUTEOPOLIS by W.B Thompson for C barrie of Dundee. 2,842gtns. L. 94.5m. B.13m. Dr. 7.6m.
She was in the jute trade from Calcutta to Dundee until 1899 when she was sold to F E Bliss of London.
In 1900 she was sold to the Anglo Ameican Oil Co, of London and used for the transportation of drums of oil to the Far east.
In 1911 she was sold to G Windram of Liverpool and in 1917 she was sold again to G Garthwaite also of Liverpool. She was then re-named he GARTHPOOL. To her new owner she was an expensive hobby, albeit he was rich. She was used in the grain trade bringing grain from Australia rounding the Horn.
Her last voyage was on the 24th October 1929 from Hull in ballast to Australia under the command of Captain David Thompson. She got a strong breeze in the Channel and stood southward from Ushant to the Cape Verde Islands ariving off Cape Verde in nine days. She ran aground on the 11th November 1929 on Boavista Isle [one of the Cape Verde Islands]. No lives were lost but GARTHPOOL was a total loss. That though was the end of the last and oldest trading square rigged four master under the British Flag.

In 1917 sold to W Garthwaite, Liverpool and re-named GARTH POOL for her owner Sir W Garthwaite.
In the Grain trade sailing via Cape Horn to Australia. Last voyage was on 24 October 1929 from Hull in ballast to Australia. Under Capt. W Thompson sailed from Ushant to Cape Verde Is in 9 days. Had good winds to Cape Verde logging 10kn. Sighting Sal Island, Cape Verde group on 11th November 1929. That night she ran aground on Boavista Isle, no lives were lost, the was a vessel total loss. Casualty report in the Times Newspaper dated 20t November 1929 states "Lloyds agent, Cape Verde Islands Telegraph November 18th Sailing vessel Garthpool's Captain and crew arrived yesterday. Salvage of the ship's gear and materials difficult. Recommend sell vessel as she lies. Captain considers the vessel will break up if bad weather continues.
