SALERNUM m.v. Cable ship. Built by Navalmeccanica Castellamare di Stabia at Naples for Compagnia Italiana Navicablo-grafiche at Palermo in 1953. The Italian GPO chartered her when there was cable work to be done but she had also been fitted out for hydrografical and oceanographical research. She had 3 cable tanks for 30,000 cu.ft. of cable. Her dimensions are 103.51m x 12.63m x 5.92m (depth) x 5.63m (draught). Her ft. is 2,834; 1,032 net and 2200 dwt. Her two Fiat diesels
of 3,500 bhp and two screws give her a speed of 17 knots. In 1984 she was sold to Transoceanic Cable Ship Co. at New York.

Length 339.6 ft Breadth 41.0 ft Depth 18.5 ft Gross tonnage 2789

Fitted out for oceanographic and hydrographic work as well as cable laying. Sold in 1984 to Transoceanic Cableship Co., a subsidiary of AT&T, and renamed CHARLES L. BROWN. Used for cable repair until 2003, when she was scuttled to form an artificial reef off the island of St. Eustatius in the Caribbean.
