Slieve Row

Post by john sefton » Sun Nov 08, 2009 9:43 pm

Iron full rigged ship. Built in 1878 by Harland and Wolff, Belfast for S.P.Sinclair of Liverpool.
1667 tons.
Dimensions 257.1' x 38.3' x 23.1'.
On a passage out with general cargo to Calcutta, the Slieve Roe covered 1500 miles in 5 days, carrying all plain sail in the S.E. trades and logging nearly 17 knots at several points. Her rigging plans included stunsails on her foremast. Her hull was made of iron and designed for good carrying power and great seeworthiness as well as speed.
The Slieve Roe's ownership was transferred to the Simpson Brothers; her captain, David George continued to make consistently fast passage times to India, North America and The Antipodes.
The Slieve Roe, after running until 1910 under the house flag of Simpson Bros. was sold that year to the Norwegians for the sum of £2000 to be broken up.
