Built as a monitor under yard No 573 by John Brown Shipbuilding & Engineering Company Ltd., Clydebank for the Royal Navy.
30 April 1940 laid down.
01 February 1941 launched under the name HMS ROBERTS, one sister HMS ABERCROMBIE, the ROBERRTS was named after Field Marshal Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (1832 – 1941).
Displacement 7.973 standard, 9.150 tons full load. Dim. 113.69 x 27.12 x 4.14m.
Powered by two Parsons steam turbines, 4.800 hp., speed 12.5 knots.
Armament 2 – 15 inch, 8 – 4 inch AA, 16 – 2pdr pom-pom and 20 – 20mm guns.
Crew 446 maximum.
27 October 1941 completed.
She reused the turret of the World War I monitor MARSHALL SOULT.
After completing used for bombardment support of Operation Torch in North Africa, during this operation was she damaged by two 500 kilo bombs on 11 November 1942 near Bougie.
After her repair used in Operation Husky the landings in Sicily, in June 1943.
Took part in the Allied landings near Salerno in Operation Avalanche, September 1943
June 1944 took part in the D-Day landings; she sailed from the Solent on 5th June at 17.30 arrived Eastern Task Force area the 6th at 05.20. She was a unit of Bombarding Force D in assault convoy S6.
Provided notable gunfire support: expended 69 rounds of main ammunition the same day till 16.00.
21.30 that day on 15 inch gun became defective but she continued in action with her other gun.
25 August returned in the Solent.
Took also part in the Walcheren operations, landings in November 1944 of the Allied forces on Walcheren to make the River Scheldt usable for Allied shipping to Antwerpen, (Antwerp.)
1956 Harbour service.
June 1965 sold for scrap.
03 August 1965 arrived by Ward at Inverkeithing, for breaking up.
