August 1809 commissioned, her first commander was Fitzowen Skinner (who died 23 May 1810) for the downs, then under command of Commander John Lamborn until October 1810, "TRINCULO" was in that time in service in the English Channel. Oct. 1810 stationed at Sheerness 1811 Command taken over by Alexander Renny. On 1 and 2 October 1811 Capt. Renny faced a court martial aboard "RAISONABLE" in Sheerness harbour, on charges brought by his late 1st lieutenant John Hill, alleging repeated drunkenness and cowardice. He was honourably acquitted of all charges and the court said they were at a loss for words to describe the perversion of truth and insubordination which pervaded the officers of the "TRINCULO". On 18 and 19 of the same month Acting Lieut. Croke was found guilty of contempt, improper language and conspiracy against Capt. Renny. He was admonished to be more circumspect in his conduct and rendered incapable of promotion for two years. On the 2nd of the following February, Lieut. Cornelius Lascelles was also found guilty of conspiring against his commander and was dismissed the service. During that the "TRINCULO" was still in service in the English Channel. Between 1814/15 stationed at Spithead. Between 1816/22 stationed at Portsmouth. From January 1823 stationed at Cork. Between 1824/25 commanded by Rodney Shannon.
April 1827 Command taken over by Robert Patton. Sept. 1828 Command taken by Samuel Price She was re-commissioned June 1829 at Cork, so it looks she was de-commissioned at Cork before. 1831/32 Stationed at Plymouth. July 1833 Command taken over by James Booth. In service on the coast of Africa. The "TRINCULO" visited Ascension in 1835. 1836 Command was taken over by H.J.Puget (act), in service on the coast of Africa. Dec. 1836 command taken over by Henry Coffin at Lisbon January 1837 stationed at Plymouth. July 1841 broken up at Plymouth.
The British Indian Ocean Territory issues of 1999 80 p depict also the brig HMS "TRINCULO" built in 1809 but somewhere there has been made a mistake, the Ascension "TRINCULO" has three masts and the BIOT "TRINCULO" only two masts. I am not a sailing expert, but so far I know a brig has two masts, both square rigged and behind the after mast a spanker, as seen on the BIOT stamp. Which vessel is the correct "TRINCULO"?
